Josh's Birthday

Josh is a kid who loves birthdays. He talks about them for weeks in advance and then for weeks after he continues to talk about how old he'll be on the next birthday and the birthday after that. So with this being his first birthday while going to school, you can imagine the excitement.

We went to Chuck E. Cheese's the night before his birthday. There was plenty of pizza and soda, lots of tokens, enough games to keep a 5 year old in kiddie heaven, and in the end a whole bunch of cheap prizes that have been forgotten already. It was a ton of fun for the kids and the beginning of a birthday celebration that would stretch on for a few weeks.

On the morning of his birthday, Josh got dressed and then barged in on me in the shower to say, "Mom, I'm 6 years old!!!" I started to sing happy birthday to him, but before I could even get halfway through, he was gone.

Of course, since Josh is a big kindergarten kid now, he got cupcakes in his classroom and a snazzy birthday crown.


We celebrated at home with sloppy joes and french fries for dinner, at Josh's request. He didn't eat much of the sloppy joes because the deep fried french fries were just too tempting.

He also had to save room for the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. He picked out the cake, helped make the frosting and helped frost the cake.

Unfortunately, in regards to wish fulfillment, Josh's 6 candles were spread way too far apart and it took him several tries to blow them all out. Someone pointed that out to him and he responded that it was ok because he already had his wish.
If he didn't have his wish before, he certainly got it now - a double light saber with sound effects that lights up. Josh is crazy for anything star wars related. He is now the proud owner of 2 regular light sabers, a double sided one, a clone trooper helmet and a clone trooper gun, with one more addition that soon followed. Another little quirk about Josh, he loves getting the mail. He always thinks there will be something in it for him. Even if there isn't, he begs us to let him keep the junk mail. So with the expectation of birthday mail, Josh is aglow in anticipation every time Robert walks in with the mail.

Josh received one card before his birthday, one on his birthday and 2 in the days after. The late ones were from his Grandparents with a special surprise inside. Between the 2 cards, he had $20 of birthday money to spend. He begged to go to the store, and finally, about 2 weeks after his birthday, he got his wish. We headed off to Target where Josh acquired yet another Star Wars toy. This time it was a Lego battle ship of some kind that came with 2 clone troopers and 2 battle droids.

All-in-all, I'd say we have a happy and satisfied 6 year old boy who is growing up way too fast for this mother's liking.
