The Sacrament

The sacrament means different things to different members of the family. It is met mostly by indifference by the middle of the family (Emilee - Matthew) and anxiously by the ends, but for vastly different reasons. Robert and I take the sacrament as a way to renew our covenants and take the time to think of Jesus and his atonement. Sarah has discovered her own reason to be excited.

Once she sees the boys walking up the sides of the church while we all sit, she starts anxiously looking around. She saw the bread going up the row behind us today and her eyes got as wide as saucers. When she saw it coming down our row, she was bouncing up and down. Then, heaven, as she gets her own private snack out of the big shiny tray.

She enjoys her little snack, and then gets excited all over again when she sees the boys come back. The two of us were at the end of the row today, so she got a close look at the deacon standing next to us. She looked up at his face and then looked down, expectantly at his arms. She noticed they were empty, so she started to search. She looked behind us, in front of us, and down toward the other end of the row. And wonder of wonders - here came a little cup full of water, just for her.

When she was done, she looked around, but not quite as enthusiastically. She knew that her turn was done. Some day she'll have some idea of the significance of this weekly occurance, but for now she revels in the joy of spontaneous snack time brought to her by those strange boys in white shirts.
