Matthew earns his Bear

April pack meeting for cub scouts was quite an exciting one for Matthew. It started out with some skits and a few games. Matthew played a knight, a villager, and a little kid in the Bear den's skit. It was pretty cute, and as an added bonus, we could actually hear what they were saying.

This is a picture of one of the games. The boys had to use one of those party favors that you blow into and it rolls out, then rolls back up when you stop blowing. (I'm sure they have a name, but with my limited brain capacity, I can't remember it.) Anyway, they used this nameless item to push a little chocolate egg across the floor. Some of the boys got the hang of it right away. Matthew did not. He was still going long after the leaders had finished. He was a good sport about it, but did not seem anxious to get out there and try again.

Next they played a quiz game with a spinner. There were several dinosaurs on the spinner and one lose a turn space. Each boy got a turn to spin and answer a question. Pack meeting almost came to a halt when the boy least equipped to deal with spinning lose a turn, promptly spun lose a turn. He managed to hold it together, and the cub master did a second round for his benefit. The whole room was holding their breath as he spun the second time and came extremely close to a catasrophic second lose a turn. We all laughed with relief as it barely ticked past and landed on a dinosaur instead.

As a treat for the boys, they decided to have the parents come up with a skit using props the cub master had brought. It ended up pretty lame, but amusing just the same.

For Matthew the most exciting part of the evening came next. Finally, he was able to participate in the awards part of a pack meeting. And he decided to go for the gusto. He earned his Bear badge, one gold arrow, one silver arrow, and his religious square knot. He worked very hard to earn all these things and we were so proud of him.

And the best part is, I don't have to sew any more patches on a uniform for another year. Hurray!
